Dory

Dory is a small boat that has between five and seven meters or between 16 and 23 feet in length. These types of boats are lightweight with a flat bottom, high sides and sharp bows and they can be used for whitewater rafting and as fishing boats both in the open sea and in coastal waters.

Dories allow people moving easily through the water, irrespective of whether they are used an outboard motor or wind, or people row.There are several variations of dories such as South Haven Dory, the Banks Dory, Cape Ann Dory, River Dories and SwampscottDory.
This type of boats is usually expensive but you don’t have to buy one because create a dory is really easy, simple and affordable. Dories have a simple style; however, they are widely recognized for their rowing ease and seaworthiness. Dories have a spacious design thus it can transport large loads without losing balance and stability.
There are several types of dories, and some of traditional types are the following:

Dory model
  • Beach dories: These types of Dories were the earliest known, and were developed for fishing. The Swampscott dory is the most famous example of the beach dories.
  • Banks dories: These types of Dories often are known as the original dory. The Banks dories were created in the 1830s. The design of the banks dories influenced the design of local fishing boats. Banks dories aren't as easy to row as the Swampscott dories, but they were produced in larger numbers and these were famous as work boats.
  • Sailing dories: The Sailing Dories were created for pleasure sailing and become popular in Massachusetts. The Townclass is a late example of a sailing dory, the Alpha and Beachcomber series were earlier types.
  • River dories: These types of dories are similar the Banks dories, but are a different model and were built in a different place, in a different time and for a different objective.This dory is very heavy construction and can take hits on boulders, long low-geared oars, inboard strong metal rowlocks, and long blade oars. In several cities of United States, river dories are used for the river rapids.

Nowadays, the dories have had resurgence so a large number of modern marine designers are trying to refine these types of boats and experimenting with this boat’s design.
